Project Overview

For our project we are setting out to design and build an animatronic robot for use in Drexel’s haunted maze outreach. Our goal is to design a large scale robot consisting of moving parts using DC motors, computer programming, as well as audio and lighting effects on the robot. We are expecting and preparing for some major challenges going into the design process. One of these issues is the process of the programming. This will most likely be our main concern in getting our animatronic robot to work. We are definitely going to put an emphasis on the programming aspect because it is essential to have the robot actually appear to animate. Other than programming, we may expect to face some challenges in determining the capacity of the DC motors and how much weight it can consistently bare the load for, and we will be faced with the problem of the wiring for the design.

Our plan is to create an animatronic to be used in a hallway within a haunted house in order to scare children during Halloween. Through this course, we have to learn how to integrate mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering principles and combine all of the skills we have learned to create the animatronic. Major tasks involve creating the mechanic itself as well as creating codes to command the animatronic to do certain movements. Our technical challenges involve learning all the mechanical and electrical parts of the robot. Our desired outcome would simply be a robot that functions and can do its job of scaring children.
